Fredrick "Fred" Joe Hensel, 76, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Beatty Funeral Home in Washington. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
Fredrick J. Hensel was born March 29, 1943, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Mark Clinton Sr. and Mary (Leon) Hensel. He graduated from Washington High School in 1961. Fred received his A.A. from Burlington College in 1965 and B.S. from the University of Missouri in 1967. Fred enlisted in the Army in 1967 and served in Vietnam. He received his CPA certification in 1968. He met his wife while working for Graf and Co. in Fairfield. Fred was united in marriage to Debra Whitten on June 5, 1976, in Fairfield and then moved to Washington, where he worked with his father Clint Hensel. After his father's retirement, he worked for Estal & Rosenboom until 1981 and then worked at Hensel Latta Harris & Yotty until the mid-90s. Toward the end of his working career, he opened and ran Fred Hensel CPA PC until he retired in 2014. Fred was a part of the Lion's club, AM Kiwanis and Winga's coffee club. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, bird watching, reading and his trip on the Honor Flight in 2018.
Fred is survived by his wife, Deb of Washington; children, Megan Hensel and Eric Hensel of Washington; brother, Mark C. "Buzz" Hensel Jr. (Dot) of Arlington, Texas; brother-in-law, Stan (Linda) Whitten of Keosauqua; sister-in-law, Marla (Mike) Crew of Fairfield, guardian of niece, Susie Hensel of Manhattan, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Gib and Evelyn; brother, Kenneth Hensel; and sister-in-law, Jane Hensel.
