Garth Vernon Rustan, 80, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, December 23, 2021, at the Washington County Hospital following a sudden illness.
Calling hours will begin
2 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, where the family will be present to receive friends from 4 to
7 p.m. Services to celebrate the lives of Garth and Harriet will be held at a later date at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington. Garth was born June 5, 1941, in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Fritz and Agnes (Johnston) Rustan. He attended school in Ruthven, Iowa, and Washington, Iowa, graduating from Washington High School in 1959. Garth attended college for one year and then had the opportunity to play minor league baseball for the Cincinnati Redlegs. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960 where he served honorably until 1964. On December 17, 1960, Garth was united in marriage to Harriet Kleese in Washington, Iowa.
He lived all of his adult life in Washington, where he worked in several capacities at Wilson Concrete for many years retiring in 2008. He previously worked at Metromail in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and Perfex in Washington. Garth was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church. His love of baseball continued as he coached his sons' little league teams for many years. He and Harriet also ran the concession stand at the baseball field for many years. Garth enjoyed attending his kids and grandkids many activities and was an avid Washington Demon fan. He enjoyed woodworking and taking time to visit with his many friends.
He is survived by his son, Tim (Diane) Rustan of Delray Beach, Florida; daughter, Carol (Chris) Koegel of Moon Township, Pennsylvania; son, David (Kate) Rustan of Kohler, Wisconsin; son, Mark (Kim) Rustan of San Antonio, Texas; ten grandchildren: Lindsay Rustan, Katie Rustan, Jenni (Derek) Lee, Cassidy (Zach) Sweet, Coulter Koegel, Khloe Rustan, Mimi Rustan, Harrison Rustan, Grant Rustan and Hayden Rustan; and three great-grandchildren.
Garth was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriet, in 2020; infant son, Michael; and one sister, Glenice Larson.
