Gene Edward Brookhart, 82, of Ainsworth, passed away Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020, at the Washington County Hospital from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the United Church of Crawfordsville with Pastor Jason Collier officiating. Calling hours will begin at noon Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment with military honors will be held at Crawfordsville Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the United Church of Crawfordsville. Online condolences may be sent for Gene's family through the web at www.jonesfh.com.
Gene was born Aug. 30, 1937, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Archie Ray and Mary R. (Willits) Brookhart. He graduated from Muscatine High School in 1955. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 until 1961. While in the service, Gene was stationed in Africa, France, Switzerland and Germany. Gene was united in marriage to Maria Dal Degan on June 13, 1959, in a small village in France.
Gene lived most of his adult life in the Crawfordsville and Ainsworth communities. He worked for the Natural Gas Pipeline as a technician and was self employed as an electrician. He attended the United Church of Crawfordsville. Gene was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fixing things, working on cars and caring for his pets.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Brookhart of Ainsworth; son, John Brookhart and wife Christine of Kissimmee, Fla.; son, Don Brookhart and wife Kathy of Wayland; daughter, Sandra Augustine and husband Marty of Robins; daughter, Melinda Grove and husband John of South English; and daughter, Diana Schoonover and husband Eric of Washington, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Ali Jay and husband Brandon, Sam Brookhart and wife Devin, Olivia Brookhart, Adam Grove, Audrey Grove, Stephanie Koehler and Jessica Schoonover; two geat-grandchildren, Mattilyn and Valerie; sister, Judy Fry and husband Ed of Muscatine; and sister, Mary Vian and husband Larry of Silvis, Ill..
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; and his brothers, Richard and Gary Brookhart.
