Gene Richard Shacklett, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of New London, died Friday, Nov. 30, at Henry County Health Center.
A graveside funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 4, at Trinity Cemetery in Mt. Union, with Pastor Rod Cooper officiating. Military rites were provided by the Henry County Honor Guard. A memorial has been established for the New London Rescue Unit.
Mr. Shacklett was born Sept. 19, 1922 in Keswick, the son of C. Glenn and Cordie Cowser Shacklett. On Dec. 29, 1945, he married Dawn A. Hull in Oskaloosa.
A graduate of What Cheer High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a radio operator during World War II, flying on supply missions along the Burma Road. He was employed at Mason Hanger for 37 years. After retirement, he owned and operated Keen Kutter Hardware in New London with his wife.
He enjoyed RVing and family vacations, was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes fan and had a special
affection for dogs.
He is survived by one daughter, Karilyn Prottsman and her husband Jon of Coralville; and one son, Richard Shacklett of Des Moines.
His parents, wife, brother Chester Shacklett and sister Minnie Billingsley preceded him in death.
