Genevieve 'Gen' O'Connor
Genevieve 'Gen' O'Connor, 90, of Mt. Pleasant died at 1:16 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2000, at Park Place of the Henry County Health Center.
The Mass Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with the Deacon Joe Demeter and Deacon Adrain Panther as the Celebrants. Internment will be in St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, January 24 at the Beatty Funeral Home with the rosary recited at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive friends following the rosary. According to Mrs. O'Connor's wishes, the casket will remain closed at the visitation. A memorial has been established.
Mrs. O'Connor was born October 4, 1909, in Dodgeville, the daughter of Frank E. and Frances Beckman Panther. She married Donald O'Connor on June 29, 1938, in Mt. Pleasant. She was a member of the St. Alphonsus Church, graduated from St. Alphonsus High School, attended business school in Ottumwa, and worked for Civil Service in Chicago and Washington, D.C. She was a life member of the Ladies VFW Auxillary Gold Star Mother and the Daughters of Isabella, a past member of the Legion of Mary, the St. Alphonsus Altar and Rosary Society, and the South Center Club. Prior to returning to her organizations, she worked at Mental Health in Mt. Pleasant. She was a very devoted Catholic throughout her life.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Prottsman and Margaret O'Connor of Mt. Pleasant, and Judith O'Connor of Iowa City; one son, Thomas O'Connor; two brothers, Joseph Panther of Mt. Pleasant and Deacon Adrain Panther of Tipton; one sister, Bernadine Panther of Mt. Pleasant; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Michael D. O'Connor, who was the first Henry County casualty in the Vietnam War; a sister; and a grandson.
