George Homer Fulton, 88, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Crawfordsville, Iowa, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021, at the United Presbyterian Home following a brief illness. Funeral services are set for

10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Pastor Erin Kaye officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the end of the funeral service. Calling hours will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Jones & Eden Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery at a later date. Memorials have been established for Sonshine Ministries in Washington or the Crawfordsville Schantz Mitchell American Legion Post. George was born Feb. 1, 1933, in rural Washington, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Lucille (Hotle) Fulton. In 1939, the legacy of the Fulton Family Farm began when the family moved to Crawfordsville. George attended school and graduated from Crawfordsville High School. On July 13, 1952, George married the love of his life, Meda Owens. They lived a life seeded in faith, family and unconditional love. They were devoted to each other until the end, celebrating 69 years of marriage this year. George was a proud American, serving honorably in the United States Army during the era of the Korean Conflict.

George lived most of his adult life in the Crawfordsville area. He and Meda welcomed their three children and raised them on the beloved family farm. He also owned and operated Fulton Insurance. In 1992, George passed the farming reins onto his son, Rick, as he and Meda moved to Washington. He was a member of the Crawfordsville Presbyterian Church and later a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Washington. George never knew a stranger and was proud to be a member of the Crawfordsville American Legion and Crawfordsville Lions Club. The Washington Tree Committee became a passion for George and was one of countless ways he gave back to his community. George and Meda were honored as distinguished volunteers. They also completed the program to become "tree stewards," an achievement they were both proud of. George served as a board member for Lending Hands, Washington County's only adult day care provider.

George always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye. He was known for his sense of humor and was often teasing or pulling a joke on someone. George enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, playing cards, ping pong and croquet. He will be dearly missed and remembered by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George took a keen interest in each of their lives and activities. He was always ready to play cards, fly a kite or show his skill in giant bubble-making. Always one to bring a smile or a laugh, George even owned a chicken suit and led the Chicken Dance at each grandchild's wedding. A family tradition unlike any other!

George loved surprising people with his colorful, mismatched socks. "I have another pair like them at home!" he would say. We invite guests to wear colorful socks in celebration of his sense of fun.

Always positive in his perspective, George would say "As long as my problems stay outside, they aren't really problems," after a hailstorm or issues in the farrowing house. He was a patriot, ending every prayer with "And be with our country and let there be peace on earth." The life lessons he taught will be forever cherished and carried on by his family.

George is survived by his loving wife, Meda of Washington, Iowa; children, Jackie (Wayne) Whitham of Pella, Iowa, Susan (Russ) Sanders of Clive, Iowa, and Rick (Annette) Fulton of Crawfordsville, Iowa; five grandchildren, Andy (Krista) Whitham of Mount Vernon, Iowa, Rob (Jill) Whitham of Shenandoah, Iowa. Eric (Danielle) Sanders of Reston, Va., Elizabeth (Lawrence) Goldfarb of Des Moines, Iowa, and Taylor (David) Yoder of Marysville, Ohio; seven great-grandchildren; his in-laws; and many nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Maxine (Joe) Martin.
