Geraldine (Gerry) Ines Sproule died peacefully at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa, on December 25, 2024.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the United Presbyterian Home dining room. The family will greet friends from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Washington Public Library or Hospice of Washington County. Online condolences may be sent for Gerry’s family at www.jonesfh.com.
Gerry was born on July 31, 1933, to Roscoe and Clella (Spurlock) Day in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Gerry grew up reading books and never stopped. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1951. She attended Indian Hills in Ottumwa and the University of Iowa teaching program. She then came to Washington to teach second grade. While teaching, the new PE teacher seemed to always be hanging around her classroom door. His loitering paid off and she ended up marrying him. Gerry married John Sproule on April 5,1958. In a year Cindy was born, then Steve, and finally Kim came along. When Kim went to school Gerry worked at Dr. Lowe’s optometrist office for many years. She also enjoyed a long career as a substitute teacher at the high school. In retirement she was able to spend a lot of time enjoying her two grandsons, Nicholas and Quinton, and watching lots of football, wrestling, and baseball. For someone who really didn’t care that much about sports, she watched a lot of games in her lifetime. She and John were able to escape Iowa’s cold and spend many enjoyable winters together in Arizona with several friends from the Washington area.
She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, John; her children, Cindy (Karl) Krebs of North Liberty, Iowa, Kim Hicks of Wichita, Kansas, and Steve (Sara) Sproule of North Liberty, Iowa; grandsons, Nicholas (Dani) Pierce and Quinton (Chloe Ward) Hicks, both of Wichita, Kansas; and nieces, Angie (Kenny) Gretter of Harper, Iowa, and Jeanna (Matt) Hills of West Branch, Iowa.
Gerry was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Nancy Blain; brothers-in-law, Gary Blain and Phil Sproule; and nephew, Curtis Blain.
The family would like to thank the staff at the United Presbyterian Home for their more than two years of loving caring for Mom. Also, a special thanks to Hospice of Washington County for their care and kindness during Mom’s final days.
