Greta Gaye Wells, 81, of Washington, IA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at her home while being cared for by her family.

Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 22nd, 2023,at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Anthony DeVaughn officiating. Family will be present to receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, IA. In lieu of flowers, Greta’s family requests that donations be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be sent to Greta’s family at www.jonesfh.com.

Greta was born on August 30, 1941, in Washington, IA, the daughter of Curtis and Laurene (Dircks) Wells. She graduated from Washington High School in 1959. After high school, Greta attended UNI for one year then attended Burlington School of Nursing.

A life-long resident of Washington, Greta was a registered nurse and Director of Nursing for over 50 years. Greta was an avid golfer, winning the Washington Golf and Country Club Women’s Championship in 1981, 1987 and 1988. She was a loyal Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears fan. She loved the holidays, especially Halloween, often making her own costumes and enjoyed sharing her holiday decor with the trick-or-treaters. Some of her favorite things included traveling, trips to various casinos, Diet Pepsi, Sterzings, Peanut M&Ms and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Wayne Kaufman of Washington, IA; sister-in-law, Avis Wells-Smith of Coralville, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Julie and Don Hanson; sister and brother-in-law, Kirtene and Frank Bruty and brother James “Butch” Wells.
