KEOTA ? Gwendolyn Luers, 93, of North English, formerly of Keota, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, in the English Valley Care Center in North English.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 7, at the Bethel United Methodist Church in rural Sigourney with the Rev. LuAnn Benge officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m., Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A memorial fund has been established for Bethel United Methodist Church, Bethel Cemetery or Keokuk County Hospice. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Luers was born Feb. 6, 1922, in rural Harper, the daughter of Wm. Harold and Evelyn Mae (Jacobs) Grove. She married Carl William Luers on Oct. 10, 1940, at the Bethel United Methodist Church in rural Sigourney.
She graduated from Sigourney High School by boarding and working for local families. She and her husband farmed in the Keota community. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. For 35 years she operated a furniture upholstery business from her home. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was a member of United Methodist Women and served as a district officer. She also belonged to the LVG Club and volunteered with Keokuk County Hospice. She enjoyed singing with the Bethel Woman?s Trio, reading, puzzles and playing games with neighbors, friends and family.
Surviving are five sons, Myron C. Luers and wife Sherry of Keota, Vernon Luers and wife Becky of Greenfield, David Luers and wife Lorie of Pierre, S.D., the Rev. Charles Luers and wife Cherie of Norwalk, and Kevin Luers and wife Pam of Keota; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three sisters, Joanne Heninger Cotton of Lakeland, Fla., Deette Hixson and husband Richard of Santa Jacinto, Calif., and Karen Elonen and husband Ron of Lady Lake, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 2007; her parents; and two sisters, Belva Grove, and Arlene Conway.
