Harold was born on January 18, 1930 to Herbert and Mabel (Beauchamp) Lee in rural Swedesburg, Iowa. He had four siblings: Louise Beaman, Dorothy (Keith) Baker, Ivan (Bernice) Lee and Betty (Terry) Huston. On November 10, 1950, he married the love of his life, Gwen Owens. They shared over 72 years enjoying family, friends and everything that they did together. He was the beloved father of Jeff Lee (Muscatine, IA) and Marlene (Bob) Fields (West Palm Beach, FL) and grandfather to his very special granddaughter, Nicole Fields.
Harold graduated from Winfield High School in 1948 and served in the Army during the Korean War where he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. After getting out of the Army, he went to barber school and was a very successful owner of Lee’s Barber Shop until he turned 80. Harold thoroughly enjoyed all his clients over the years, with most of them being decades-long repeat customers. He and Gwen were lifelong members at Wesley United Methodist Church.
Harold lived a very happy and fulfilling life that he shared with his wife, Gwen, his family, and his friends. He enjoyed sports, travel, going to shows, and doing things around the house. Harold and Gwen traveled extensively and went to all but two states in the United States and most of Canada. They made many trips to St. Louis and Florida to see their daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. He was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan who followed the Cardinals to every major league stadium and frequent times to their home stadium in St. Louis. He also immensely enjoyed Iowa Hawkeye sports, having season tickets to both football and basketball, plus going to games in every Big Ten football Stadium when the Hawkeyes played there. Harold and Gwen also went to performances at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City, Music Guild in the Quad Cities, and the Muny Theatre in St. Louis. After retiring, Harold enjoyed walking at the mall with his walking group and going to Hy-Vee to talk to his friends there. Harold had a very long life well lived.
Harold is survived by his wife, Gwen; children: Jeff and Marlene (Bob); and granddaughter, Nicole. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Huston; sisters-in-law, Bernice Lee and Kay (Jeff) Downing in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
