WELLMAN ? Harriet Louise Eyestone, 97, of Washington, formerly of Wellman, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015, in the McCreedy Home in Washington.
A celebration of life service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman with the Rev. Moody Colorado officiating. Burial was at Grace Hill Cemetery in rural West Chester. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday at Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County or the Washington County 4-H Foundation.
Mrs. Eyestone was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Brighton, the daughter of Charles Leslie and Alta Cora Rebecca (Hampsher) Eyestone. She married Lloyd Lyle ?Jerry? Hayes on May 14, 1939, in Lancaster, Missouri. To this marriage were born two children. He preceded her in death in 1952. She married Lawrence Whetstine in 1968, and the couple resided on an acreage in the Wellman area. He preceded her in death in 2008.
She attended Brighton School and graduated in 1936, receiving an academic letter. She taught rural Washington County schools, driving a Model A Ford down muddy dirt roads each spring to get to school. Her first teaching contract was for $55 per month. She studied at William Penn College in Oskaloosa and Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. She worked for the USDA for 20 years as a chief clerk at the ASCS office. She moved to Reflections at Parkview in Wellman, where she lived from October 2014 to September 2015, and then moved to the McCreedy Home in Washington.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandy Greiner of Washington; four stepchildren, Angie Ornduff and husband Ron of Ainsworth, Ed Whetstine and wife Sally of Wellman, Larry Whetstine and wife Millie of Wellman, and Carol Hough and husband Jay of West Chester; six grandchildren; step-grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd Lyle ?Jerry? Hayes; her second husband, Lawrence Whetstine; one son, Douglas Hayes; her parents; two brothers, Clifford, and Dale Eyestone; and five sisters, Geneva Zihlman and husband Howard, Dorothy Elmore and husband Oren, Jean Knight and husband Joe Knight Jr., Evelyn Trask and husband Gene, and Norma Icenbice and husband Dean.
