Harriett C. Rustan, 78, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at the Halcyon House in Washington.
Private family graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 20, at the Elm Grove Cemetery with Pastor Erin Kaye officiating. A public Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Washington Community School Foundation or Hospice Compassus. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent for the family through the Web at www.jonesfh.com.
Harriett was born October 11, 1941, in Washington, the daughter of Ralph J. and Catharine (Coulter) Kleese. Harriett graduated from Washington High School in 1959 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Garth V. Rustan on Dec. 17, 1960, at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington.
Harriett lived most of her life in Washington, with the exception of four years in Norfolk, Va., with her husband who served in the U.S. Navy. She worked for the Washington Community School District where she was a Teachers Associate for 28 years, retiring in 2006. Harriett was a life long member of the United Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, organist and a Deacon. She was a member of T.T.T., Beta Sigma Phi, Y-Teen leader, Campfire director and active in music both in school and at church. Harriett enjoyed traveling, playing BINGO, baking and sharing her "Monkey Bread" with family and friends. She especially enjoyed visiting her kids and grandkids and attending their many activities.
She is survived by her husband, Garth Rustan of Washington; son, Tim Rustan and wife Diane of Delray Beach, Fla.; daughter, Carol Koegel and husband Chris of Moon Township, Pa.; son, David Rustan and wife Kate of Kohler, Wis.; son, Mark Rustan and wife Kim of San Antonio, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Lindsay, Katie and Jenni Rustan; Cassidy (Zack) Sweet and Coulter Koegel, Khloe and Maddie Rustan, and Harrison, Grant and Hayden Rustan. She also is survived by one brother, Roger Kleese and wife Linda of St. Michael, Minn., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Harriett was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Michael; two brothers, Robert and William Kleese; sisters-in-law, Donna Kleese, Karen Kleese and Glenice Larson; as well as her mother-in-law and father-in-law.
