Harvey B. Holden, age 105, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, June 26, 2022, at the United Presbyterian Home.
Celebration of life services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at the United Presbyterian Church with services officiated by Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke. General calling hours will be held from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. The family will greet friends following services on Wednesday at the United Presbyterian Church. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the United Presbyterian Home Resident Benevolent Fund. Online condolences may be sent for Harvey’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com.
Harvey was born May 25, 1917, in Tama, Iowa, the son of Glenn and Laura (Warner) Holden. He graduated from Davenport Central High School and continued his education taking Business and Accounting classes. Harvey was united in marriage to Ruth Wead on September 14, 1940. She preceded him in death in 2003. He later married Mary Whisler in 2005.
Harvey served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked as an Accountant for the Tax Commission in Des Moines, Iowa, before moving to Washington in 1947. He farmed north of Washington for many years. Harvey was very civic-minded and served on the Washington City Council for many years and was Mayor of Washington until he retired in 1997. He was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. Harvey served on the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Washington, United Presbyterian Home and Farm Service. He was a member of the Washington Rotary Club, Washington Economic Development Group, Washington Chamber of Commerce and served as President of the Washington Farm Bureau.
He is survived by four daughters: Barbara Leeper of Washington, Iowa; Lorene Sundquist of Mesa, Arizona; Laura (Rollin) Davison of Washington, Iowa; Pat DeSotel of Washington, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Harvey was preceded in death by his wife Ruth; wife Mary; son, Richard Holden; three brothers, Edgar, Charles and Birchard Holden; and three sisters, Helen Larson, Virginia Dunville and Lila Shotwell.
