KALONA ? Helen Joan Heusinkveld, 86, of Kalona, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, in the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, at the First Mennonite Church in Iowa City, where the family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time. The Rev. Jim Grossnickle-Batterton and C0haplains John King and Dianne Brenneman will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday at the Story City Cemetery in Story City with the Rev. Dan Kuchuck officiating. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, at the Friendship Center at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home and Mosaic (Lutheran-based services for people with intellectual disabilities). The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Heusinkveld was born March 14, 1930, in Story City, the daughter of Gerhard ?Guy? and Cornelia Theodora (Jacobson) Rod. She married Edwin Heusinkveld on June 6, 1957, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.
She graduated from Story City High School, attended Waldorf College and graduated from Luther College with a BSN. She and her husband lived in Iowa City; Big Rapids, Michigan; Springfield, Ohio; Urbandale; West Des Moines; and had lived in Kalona since December 2012. She worked as a nurse at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City and was a private caregiver for many years. She was a member of the St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale, where she sang in the choir, and was active with the hospitality committee. She spent much of her time volunteering with disability services.
Surviving are three sons, David Heusinkveld and wife Gail of Kalona, John Heusinkveld of Tomahawk, Wisconsin, and Mark Heusinkveld of Des Moines; four grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and one sister, Myrle Shaw of Story City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed; one sister, Glendora Proctor; and one brother, Myron Rod.
