Helscher donates battle flag to Navy Museum
?It was wind-whipped, it was diesel-stained, it was a mess,? said Bill Helscher as he described the American flag that flew aboard the U.S.S. Shasta throughout the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima.
Assistant Gunnery and Cargo Officer Helscher served during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Shasta (AE6) for the United States Navy. The Shasta was an ammunitions ship that supplied 56,000 rounds of five-inch star shells to destroyers in the fleet during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
