Herbert R. “Sonny” Phipps, age 83, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, May 21, 2023, in Washington, Iowa.
Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Erin Kaye officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Friday. Interment with military honors will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County. Sonny was born May 14, 1940, in Menifee County, Kentucky, the son of Russell and Alba (McKenzie) Phipps. He attended school in Kentucky. Sonny served honorably in the United States Army from 1958 until 1962 and later in the Army Reserves. He was united in marriage to Rita Wright on June 4, 1977.
Sonny worked in construction as a Senior Project Manager on several large projects including The Anaheim Ducks Arena in California, the Columbus Blue Jackets Arena in Ohio, and Lambeau Field in Wisconsin. He was baptized and attended church at United Presbyterian Church in Washington. He was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and traveled to 42 of the 48 Continental United States. Sonny enjoyed fishing, hunting, ATV riding, carpentry, and spending time at Land Between the Lakes.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Phipps of Washington, Iowa, and son, Brian (Anne) Phipps of Bettendorf, Iowa.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
