KALONA ? Hubert Joseph Gent, 71, of Kalona, died Friday, June 19, 2015, at his home after a hard-fought battle with brain lymphoma.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 23, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. Burial will be in St. Patrick?s Little Creek Cemetery near Kinross. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 22, at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, where a Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Miracles in Motion Therapeutic Equestrian Center and Trappist Caskets for Children.
Mr. Gent was born Feb. 14, 1944, in Kinross, the son of Paul and Mary (Clarahan) Gent. He married Jeanette Wehr on May 29, 2004, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond.
He graduated from English Valley High School in 1963. He served in the Army Reserve. He farmed in the Harper community for many years and worked as a custodian at the University of Iowa for 10 years. He had lived in Kalona since 2003. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, his horse, traveling, family history, and gardening.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanette, of Kalona; eight children, Kathryn Kieckhafer and husband Dave of Platteville, Wis., Mark Gent and wife Kev of Kalona, Kevin Gent and wife Kim of Simpsonville, S.C., Molly Sprouse and husband Jeff of Keota, Karla Elliott and husband Nick of Cedar Falls, Shaila Gent and spouse Nicole of Salem, Mass., Brian Peck of Clive, and Renee Shaffer and husband Jeff of Des Moines; 19 grandchildren; five brothers, Dennis Gent and wife Shirley of Webster, Raymond Gent and wife Donna of North English, Marvin Gent of Williamsburg, Leo Gent and wife Barbara of Omaha, Neb., and Pat Gent and wife Mary of Keota; and three sisters, Henrietta O?Connnell and husband Frank of Marion, Pauline McDonald and husband Frank of Cedar Rapids, and Ellen Morrison and husband Wayne of Williamsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, John.
