Hugh Henry Breuer, 81, of Salem, died Sunday, Nov. 11, at Henry County Health Center.
Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Salem Congregational Church at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, with pastor Harold Dorsey officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Burlington Memorial Cemetery in Burlington.
Memorials have been established to Salem Congregational Church and Hope Baptist Church in Winterhaven, Fla.
Hugh was born Aug. 31, 1926, in Franklin Township, the son of Edward and Minnie Taeger Breuer. On June 26, 1949, he married Phyllis Balzer in Latty Church Settlement north of Burlington.
Having attended school in Franklin township, he was a farmer and carpenter, driving a truck delivering car parts in Florida. He sold seed corn and raised cattle. He attended Salem Congregational Church, and helped found Hope Baptist Church in Winterhaven.
He served as a Salem Township trustee, Salem Congregational Church trustee and Sunday school superintendent, was a member of the Hillsboro school board and a Henry County Extension Service officer, as well as a measurer for ASC. He enjoyed reading, woodworking, travel and golf, once scoring a hole in one.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Alan Breuer and his wife Darcella of Palmyra, Mo. and Bruce Breuer and his wife Shari of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Linda Rowe and her husband Lanny and Luan Schmitt and her husband Sid, all of New London; a sister, Lucille Heckenberg of Fairfield; eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His parents, son Brian, brothers Alfred and Roy, and sisters Anna, Laura, Grace, Edith and Cora preceded him in death.
