Ian Elias Stakland, 24. of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 12, 2020. Ian was diagnosed with cancer shortly after his high school graduation. He received tremendous care and treatment from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital starting in July 2014. In March 2020, the cancer returned, and Ian received further treatments from St. Jude from May through July. Ian was recently transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals to be near family and friends.
Memorial services and interment will be held at a later date. Memorials have been established for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Ian was born August 26, 1995, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of David and Roberta (Greene) Stakland. He attended school in Fairfield, Iowa, through the eighth grade and then attended Scattergood School in West Branch, Iowa. Ian attended Washington Community School during his 10-12 grade years, graduating in 2014. Ian attended school for two years in Massachusetts.
While in high school, music was very important to Ian. He was active in Band, Marching Band, Choir and Show Choir. He was also active in Theatrical Productions while in high school and college and participated in several community productions. Ian was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was an Altar Server at St. Mary's in Fairfield, Iowa. Ian had a passion for socializing and gaming with his friends online and he was known for his great sense of humor. Ian grew up very active in Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He received the District Eagle Scout Project of the Year and the Council Eagle Scout Project of the Year awards for his project restoring and cleaning the Friends Cemetery near What Cheer, Iowa.
One of Ian's last wishes was to sing with Peter Hollens which St. Jude made possible through virtual media. Ian also had a very inquisitive mind. He loved finding unique videos online about science, philosophy, music, humor or nature, and sharing obscure facts that he found interesting with others. Ian loved Red Pandas. St. Jude made it possible for Ian to fulfill another of his last wishes to meet one at the Memphis Zoo.
He is survived by his parents, David and Roberta (Greene) Stakland of Washington, Iowa; siblings, Melissa, Jayla and Robert "Bobby" Stakland, all of Washington, Iowa; paternal grandmother, Olive Stakland of What Cheer, Iowa; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Ian was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Vera Greene; paternal grandfather, Elias Stakland; and aunt, Judy Greene.
