Irene L. Rice

KALONA ? Irene Lucille Rice, 84, of Kalona, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, in Pleasantview Home in Kalona.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 6, at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Riverside with the Rev. David Brownfield, Ph.D., and the Rev. Rich Adam officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m., Friday at St. Mary?s Cemetery in Solon. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Christian radio station Life 101.9 or a charity of the donor?s choice.

Mrs. Rice was born Dec. 13, 1930, in Iowa City, the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth (Wanning) Rogers. She married Francis Rice on Sept. 3, 1952, in Iowa City.

She graduated from Iowa City High School in 1949. She and her husband lived in Riverside, Solon, and Mount Vernon. After her husband?s death, she moved to Kalona in 2002. She worked at Northwestern Bell, University of Iowa, Iowa State Bank, and Aldens. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon and Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond, Altar and Rosary Society, The Foresters, Linn County Porkettes, and Linn County Farm Bureau. She enjoyed farming with her husband, tending to her chickens, baking, frequent day trips with her sister Mary, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are one sister, Mary E. Rogers of Iowa City; seven children, Patricia Troyer and husband Randy of Kalona, Michael Rice and wife Kathy of Mount Vernon, Sandra Schloss and husband Barry of Tabor, South Dakota, Jane Crochet and husband Larry of Santa Fe, Texas, Mary Emge and husband Kevin of Grinnell, Barbara Rice-Wisthoff and husband Bob of Michigan City, Indiana, and Joan Williams and husband Doug of Danville; 21 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 44 years, in 1996.
