Iris Strait Lyon, 97 of Fairfield, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at Jefferson County Health Center. Iris was born May 18, 1925, in Lebanon, Iowa to Lee and Lenna Bingaman Strait. She attended country school in Lebanon and graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1942.

Iris taught at Bonnett school, east of Birmingham for 1 ½ years. While teaching there she met Bruce Lyon while he was home on leave from the Navy. Bruce’s younger brother Max was one of her students. They married September 10, 1944, in Yuma, Arizona. Bruce and Iris were married 55 years before Bruce passed away in 2000.

Iris worked many years at Universal Producing Co. in Fairfield. She later cooked at Bruce’s Café and the McElhinney House. Her main hobbies were quilting, reading and gardening. She sewed and hand quilted probably 100 quilts. She loved her flowers, especially irises and lilies.

Iris and Bruce moved to the family farm north of Stockport in 1948 and lived there until 1971 when they moved to Fairfield.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield.

Iris is survived by daughter, Connie Hedger and husband Larry of Fairfield; son, Steven Lyon and wife Gerri of West Point; four grandchildren, Matthew (Kristen) Hedger of Snoqualmie, WA, Kristine Hoy of Rocky River, OH, Troy (Melinda) Lyon of Keosauqua, Hillary (Brent) Svenby of Pella; nine great grandchildren, Macy Hedger, Mallory Lyon, Logan Hedger, Grace Lyon, Kegan Hoy, Genevieve Svenby, Khloe Hoy, Reid Svenby and Andin Lyon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Lenna Strait; one brother, Bob Strait; and one sister, Enid Baity .

Visitation for family and friends will be 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 31, 2022, at Behner Funeral Home with service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Joseph Phipps will be officiating. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery.
