Iva Arlene Tinkle, 87, of Malcom, IA passed away on October 19, 2023.
A funeral service was held at 10:30 am, Monday, October 23, 2023, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, IA. Graveside services will be at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom, IA, followed by a luncheon at the Malcom Auditorium.
Visitation was held from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Sunday, October 22, 2023, at Smith Funeral Home.
Memorials may be designated to UnityPoint Hospice Grinnell, mailed in c/o Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.
Iva was born the daughter of Clayton Lee Tish and Mary Opal (Vought) Tish in Montezuma, Iowa on December 23, 1935. She was raised near Montezuma and graduated from the Montezuma Community School.
On April 22, 1954, Iva was married to Verlan (Shorty) Tinkle at the Montezuma Methodist Church. She was a farm girl and loved working on the farm. She worked for Wayne Gropper and helped on the farm, then after the kids were all in school Iva worked at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance for many years. After she retired from Reinsurance, she worked part time with the Poweshiek Co. FSA Office in Malcom. That part time job ended up lasting for 7 years. She loved gardening and always had a big vegetable garden and would can or freeze all the produce. Shorty and Iva loved going to dances in Grinnell and the surrounding area. They loved traveling and have been in every state west of Ohio to Florida and went to Germany and France. Their favorite place was Oregon and the west coast. Iva loved feeding the birds and always had a competition with her sister Agnes on who would see the first Robin in the spring. She loved making Christmas candies and goodies. She loved watching the kids’ and grandkids’ activities and visiting with family.
Iva is survived by her children, Steven Tinkle of Malcom, Gloria Shawler (Sara Redenius) of Marshalltown, Mike Tinkle of Malcom and Lyle Tinkle (Anne Armstrong) of Shellsburg, two grandchildren, Stanley Joe Shawler (Ashley) of Grinnell and Sarah Perry of Marshalltown, great-grandchildren, Emma Shawler, Alexis Perry, Sydney Shawler, Letty Perry and Ivy Shawler, stepgrandchildren, Alina Armstrong, Andrew Brummer, Mica Jo Paul (Ryan), Lizzie Brummer, stepgreat-grandchildren, Jordan Perry, Kaleb Perry, and EB Paul, and her sibling Kathryn Sellers of North Liberty, Iowa, and various nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Verlan on January 16, 2017; her siblings, Orpah Mabeus, Donald Tish, Mildred Bringmann, Agnes Riley, and Thelma Slectha.
