James Allen Hunsaker III, age 77, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the Washington County Hospital.
To celebrate Jim’s life, the family was present to receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 15, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Military honors were accorded at the conclusion of visitation. Private family interment will take place at a later date. James Allen Hunsaker III was born September 17, 1946, in Washington, Iowa, the son of James Allen Hunsaker II and Annie (James) Hunsaker. Jim graduated from Washington High School in 1964 and then attended the University of Dubuque on a track scholarship where he participated in the long jump. He later attended the University of Iowa. Jim served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict where he was stationed in Alaska. Jim was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Luckenbill Horak on December 10, 1993, in Washington, Iowa.
Jim grew up in Washington, Iowa, and later lived in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Ottumwa before moving back to Washington in 1990. He worked for the State of Iowa Department of Job Service for 18 years and then worked in the Auto Financing Division for several area car dealerships. Jim and Mary owned and operated Hunsaker Hometown Realty and Furniture Store until his retirement.
Jim enjoyed golfing, running and biking. After acquiring his Pilot’s license, he enjoyed flying.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Hunsaker of Washington, Iowa; son Jamie (Melanie) Hunsaker of Queen Creek, Arizona; son, James Allen Hunsaker IV of Califon, New Jersey; daughter, Maegan (Michael) Burris of Litchfield Park, Arizona; son Todd (Julia) Horak of New Lenox, Illinois; son, Joel “CJ” (Michelle Carey) Horak of Crawfordsville, Iowa; daughter, Holly (Craig) Jones of Washington, Iowa; son, Patrick (Laura) Horak of Quincy, Illinois; daughter, Theresa (Ron) Dubois of River Forest, Illinois; 27 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott Allen; sister Sheryl McKeone; and daughter, Suzanne Horak.
