James D. Slobodnik

James D. "Big Jim" Slobodnik, 70, of Mt. Pleasant, died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004.

      The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8 at the St. Alphonsus Gathering Space, with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and Camp Courageous. Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Francis and his wife Cathy Slobodnik of Topeka, Kan., Stephen and his wife Judy Slobodnik of Mt. Pleasant, Mark Slobodnik and Christopher Slobodnik, both of Spring Grove, Pa; four daughters, Anne and her husband David Russell of Davenport, Therese Slobodnik and Lisa and her husband Rick Brooks and Cathy White, all of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers, Don Slobodnik of Council Bluffs, and John Slobodnik of Neola; and 28 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia Slobodnik; a sister, Mary Slobodnik; and a brother, Bill Slobodnik.
