James E. “Jim” Wertz, age 82, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at his residence.
Private family services will be held at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington, followed by interment with military honors at Elm Grove Cemetery. General calling hours without the family present will be held on Friday, November 15, from noon to 5:00 p.m. at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. A general memorial has been established. Jim was born October 28, 1942, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Robert “Lynn” and Melva (Fleming) Wertz. He attended Walnut Country School and graduated from Washington High School in 1960. On July 21, 1962, Jim was united in marriage to Judith Sheetz in San Angelo, Texas.
A lifelong resident of Washington, Jim spent most of his career as a feed salesman before transitioning to sales at local auto dealerships. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years, including two years stationed in Scotland.
Jim enjoyed golfing, doing crosswords, and solving Sudoku puzzles. He dedicated many years to coaching his kids’ sports teams and cherished attending his grandchildren’s events. A passionate sports fan, he was an avid supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Greg Wertz, of Washington, Iowa; daughter Tracy (Brian) Strabala, of Washington Iowa; three grandchildren, Megan (Hunter) Craig, Jack (Emily) Strabala, and James Strabala; and sister Linda (Dave) Hutchcroft, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; along with several nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Samuel and Larry Wertz, and daughter-in-law Sherry.
