James Edward Hazelwood, 62, of Riverside, Iowa, died Thursday, September 29, 2022, following a year long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Calling hours will begin 11:00 a.m. Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will receive friends from 12:00 until 3:00 p.m. No funeral services are scheduled. A general memorial has been established in memory of Jim. Online condolences may be sent for Jim’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com.
Jim was born September 6, 1960, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of William and Bonnie (Taylor) Hazelwood. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1978. Jim was united in marriage to Toni Chalupa on December 1, 1984, in Washington, Iowa. They spent 37 loving years together, with cherished memories as best friends. They had one child, Megan Marie.
Jim was a very hard worker and provider, starting his first job at the age of 10, delivering papers and later working for the Ottumwa Country Club. Jim was the head cook for the Bryn Mawr Steakhouse in Ainsworth, Iowa, for 33 years. Most recently, he worked at Hy-Vee North Dodge in Iowa City.
Jim enjoyed spending time with his daughter, especially their “Monday Antics.” From grocery shopping, to teaching her to “YELL” Yahtzee! Watching the Little Mermaid for the thousandth time, spoiling her dinner, having a good “sock fight”, or a day on the golf course. Love, laughter, and memories are what we hold in our hearts.
Jim loved the game of golf, whether he was playing or watching. There was no bad day if he was playing golf. Jim looked forward to his weekly rounds of golf with his buddies on Mondays, never minding if he lost 35 cents! He enjoyed baseball, shooting pool, darts, cribbage, chess, and Scrabble. He never just let you win… you had to earn it!
His dog, Gina, was his “princess.” He loved her more than his family (and they knew it!) Gina could do no wrong in his eyes! Man’s best friend.
He is survived by his wife, Toni Hazelwood of Riverside, Iowa; daughter, Megan (Joe) Hugen of West Des Moines, Iowa; three brothers, Will (Connie) Hazelwood, Richard (Lennice) Hazelwood, John (Trina) Hazelwood all of Ottumwa, Iowa; three sisters, Karen Johnson of Tennessee; Mary Beth Ott of Boone, Iowa; and Carol (Chris) Storto of Ottumwa, Iowa. Jim is also survived by his brother-in-law, Darrell (Denise) Chalupa of Washington, Iowa; brother-in-law, Ronnie Chalupa and Gary Libenguth of Iowa City, Iowa; sister-in-law, Melody Scott of Grand Forks, North Dakota; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Mike Hazelwood and his wife, Valerie; sister, Kathy Lukehart; mother-in-law, Dee Chalupa; sister-in-law, Christina Tomas; and his beloved canine companion, Gina.
Jim was a kind and gentle soul who would always go out of his way to help others in need. Praying Jim is at peace now and surrounded by lots of puppies and “teeing it up” on the golf course with his buddies.
