James Howard Beattie
James Howard Beattie, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, died at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at his home.
The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at the Chapel of Forest Home Cemetery with the Rev. Kiboko Kiboko of First United Methodist Church officiating. Full military rites will be by American Legion Post #58 and VFW Post #2561 of Mt. Pleasant. Open visitation will be noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. There will be no family visitation. A memorial has been established.
Mr. Beattie was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Des Moines County, the son of John A. and Minnie R. Heckert Beattie. He attended Yarmouth Consolidated School and married LaVanda Holtcamp in Muskogee, Okla., on Aug. 29, 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II stationed in England. Until retiring in 1983, he owned and operated Western Auto Store on the west side of the square in Mt. Pleasant. An avid Hawkeye fan, he was a member of VFW Post #2561, and was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include his wife; a sister, Emma Mae McDonald of Morning Sun; and three nephews and a niece.
