James Montgomery Dunn, age 93, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Halcyon House in Washington.
Private family services with military honors will be held Monday, September 23, 2024, at Elm Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will begin 12:00 pm Sunday, September 22, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday. Jim was born July 15, 1931, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Herbert and Alice (Eilers) Dunn. Jim graduated from Burlington High School and later graduated from the University of Iowa in 1954. Jim met his wife Margaret while in Junior High School and they were united in marriage on January 15, 1955. The remained inseparable for almost 70 beautiful years.
Jim was a Captain in the United States Air Force, leaving in 1957, to start a 32-year career working for Western Electric/AT&T. During this time, Jim and his family lived in Illinois, Nebraska, California, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
Jim and Margaret retired to Washington in 1990 to actively engage in the family farm operation. During this time, Jim was very involved in the community and was proud to serve on the Board of Directors for the Washington State Bank, Washington County Hospital and the Wesley Life (Halcyon House) Foundation. He was also a member of the endowment committees for the Washington Community Theater and Washington Community Y and enjoyed the years spent as a Rotary member.
Jim was a strong advocate for education and served on the Kirkwood Community College Foundation. He and his family were the lead donors for the construction of the Kirkwood Regional Center in Washington.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Dunn of Washington, Iowa; son, David (Karen) Dunn of Hudson, New Hampshire; and Mark (Christine) Dunn of Washington, Iowa; four grandchildren: Kelly (Peter) Zamachaj of Litchfield, New Hampshire; Matthew Dunn of Franklin, Tennessee; Katharine Dunn of Rochester, Minnesota; and Michael Dunn of Washington, Iowa; two great-grandchildren: Andrew and Jonathan Zamachaj; two sisters, Nancy Dunn of Burlington, Iowa; and Polly Haerer of Muscatine, Iowa.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Herbert Dunn; and one sister, Anita Eagle.
