James Richard Anderson, 72, of New London, died Thursday, June 10, 2021, at Park Place in Mt. Pleasant. He was born March 18, 1949, in Mt. Pleasant, to Richard Elwin and Virginia Garmoe Anderson. He married Catherine Pobanz; they divorced. He then married Mary Beth Strause; she died January 25, 2015.

Jim was a 1967 graduate of New London High School, worked at JI Case, and later owned Main Street Market in New London. He was a member of the New London Volunteer Fire Department, enjoyed yardwork, antique cars, feeding and watching the birds, his cat Charlie, and was known for his witty one-liners.

Survivors include his sons, Michael (Shelley) Anderson of Mt. Pleasant and Tom (Molly) Anderson of Elkhorn, Nebraska; stepdaughters, Teri (Bob) Magdefrau of Mt. Pleasant and Traci (Sam) Rupp of Johnston, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one sister, Connie (Greg) Schurbon of New London; two nieces; and his special friend, Felicia Sharp of New London and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Beth and his parents.

A memorial service for James will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Nathan Cooper officiating. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, with the family receiving friends from 4 until
