James Leroy Volner Sr., 82, of Hillsboro, passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.

James was born Jan. 17, 1939, in Black, Mo., the son of James Ralph and Beulah M. (Prater) Volner. He served his country in Korea, in the United States Army First Cavalry. James was united in marriage to Kathleen L. Johnson on June 21, 1992, at their home in Hillsboro. He owned and operated a TV and appliance store and office supply business, and later went to work for Alaniz and Sons of Mount Pleasant, where he was a mechanic. James enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Hillsboro; his children, Kevin (Michelle) Volner of Waterloo, Ill., and Leisa (William) Skiles of Memphis, Tenn.;, his stepchildren, Mike (Chris) Smith of Mediapolis, Iowa, and Tom (Kelley) Smith of Bettendorf, Iowa; his grandchildren, Brock, Brian, Samantha, Dillon, Clayton, Zach, Amber, Ashley, Andy, Cheyenne, Alyssa, Levi, Mike, Stacia, Madison, Bryant and Bryce, 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, along with his brother, Gurvis (Peggy) Volner of Salem, Iowa; and his sister, Linda (Carl) Laufer of Red Bud, Ill.

James was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Keith Volner and James "Jamie" Volner Jr.; one stepson, Ron Smith; two brothers, Jesse Volner and Bobby Volner; and a sister, Nora Spears.

According to his wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant. No services will be held.
