Janet Elaine Farrier, 85, passed away at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa, on July 29, 2023. She was born May 16, 1938, in Ottumwa Iowa, the daughter of William Russell and Lola Adoris (McBurney) Sasseen of Packwood. Janet grew up in Packwood and graduated from High School in 1955. She married Merle Leo Farrier on April 8, 1956, they made their home on a farm north of Brighton while caring for their two children Kim Denise and Lee M.
Janet managed the family business as bookkeeper of the Brighton Farmers Feed Store with her husband. She was the bookkeeper for Cobb Oil Co. for many years and was employed for 19 years at Walmart. Janet was known for her fun adventurous spirit and shared much joy with all who had the pleasure to spend time with her. Some of her unique adventures were completing RAGBRAI at 40, learned to swim in her 50s, engaged with the Red Hat Society in her 60s, traveling to Florida in her 70s, and at 80 she rode in a hot air balloon and took an Alaskan Cruise. She has been a cancer survivor for 19 years and worked to help create “Fishing for a Cure” raising money for the American Cancer Society. Making greeting cards became her passion as she has blessed so many people with her kind words and thoughtfulness. Her biggest joy was spoiling her granddaughters with lots of love and special memories.
Janet is survived by her two children: Kim Farrier (Felicia Lecce) of Largo, Florida, Lee Farrier (Lori) of St Peters Missouri; four grandchildren: Madison (Josh Hicks), Makenna (Cole Kizer), Milyn and Macie Farrier; and one brother, John Sasseen (Mary); and 5 sisters Joyce Brown (Dale), Sandy Vogel, Debbie Wonderlich (Randy), Donna Sasseen, Marty Chandler (Virgil); and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle; and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at the Brighton Community Church at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday August 2, 2023, with Rev. Rick Zickefoose and Pastor Andrew Zuehlke officiating. Burial will follow in Sandy Hook Cemetery near Brighton. Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday evening 5 to 7:30 P.M. Memorials to benefit the Brighton Community Church, Washington County Relay for Life (check should be made to the American Cancer Society) or the United Presbyterian Home Resident Activities Program may be left at the church or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 301, Brighton, IA 52540. Gould Funeral Home of Brighton is in charge of arrangements.
