A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2023, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Jared was born May 25, 1937, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Howard and Helen (Milligan) Hills. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. Jared earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Iowa, where he met his future wife, Carol Tangen. They were united in marriage on Aug. 23, 1959, at Stavanger Lutheran Church, Ossian, Iowa. They were married nearly 64 years. He went to work for Divine Engineering, Inc., right out of college, became owner in 1973, never retired, and continued to enjoy going into the office for 63-plus years. He was very proud of the business and was well respected in his field.
Jared loved spending time with his family. He was a busy man and enjoyed many activities. Some of his favorites were family ski trips, tennis, chess, anything Mt. Pleasant, Rotary, and touring Iowa with Carol in the 1949 Ford during Motor-Ioway. He enjoyed a good meal and had preferred restaurant stops en route to most U.S. destinations.
Jared was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for 63 years. Music was very important to Jared; he played in the University of Iowa Marching Band in the 1957 Rose Bowl Parade, University of Iowa Alumni Band (never missed a homecoming), Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, and the New Horizons Band. He served on boards for Asbury, Salvation Army, and United Way.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Hills; daughter, Kari (Colin) Dirks; son, Paul (Cindy) Hills; grandchildren, Ryan (Alyssa) Dirks, Alison (Ryan) Richardson, Hunter Hills (fiancée, Laura), Annie Hills and Walker Hills; great-grandchildren, Ava Richardson, Alaina Richardson and Andrew Dirks; and brother, H.
