Jean Kessel

KALONA ? Jean Kessel, 87, of Kalona, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016, in Parkview Manor in Wellman.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wellman with the Rev. David Brownfield, Ph.D., officiating. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Compassus of Cedar Rapids, and WCDC Inc. in Washington.

Mrs. Kessel was born Sept. 4, 1928, in Linwood, California, the daughter of Harold and Lena (Lewis) Bottger. She married Harold Robert Kessel on May 9, 1946, in Pleasant Plain.

She grew up in the Ollie and Richland area, and graduated from Ollie High School. She and her husband lived in Ollie, Kinross, North English and Joetown until moving to Kalona in 1992. She worked at the Canterbury Inn for 15 years, along with helping on the farm. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. She enjoyed spending time with family, riding horses and her mule, rodeos, country music, spending time with her dogs, cooking, sewing, going to the casino, and traveling with her husband in their motor home.

Surviving are three children, Carol Wilson and husband Jim, Connie Kessel, and Nancy Townsend and husband Jim, all of Wellman; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Beverly Ann Able of Ollie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 2013; one sister, Ruth Bennison; and one infant grandson.
