Jeff was born July 2, 1958 in Washington, Iowa, the eleventh child of Bernard and Dorothy (Wilson) McCarthy. Jeff was very smart and enjoyed learning about everything, especially history, nature, science and space-related subjects. He acquired a wealth of knowledge as an avid reader, had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed a lively round of political discourse. He was also a big sports buff and a trivia master – he always amazed us with his ability to remember details of a wide range of subjects; he could take down almost anyone in a game of Jeopardy. We didn't need to Google anything – just ask Jeff!
He was affectionately known as the "Eimert" for many years. It was a nickname as unique as Jeff was. Jeff often had fun using Eim in his writing – so we way: "Eim so glad that you were my brother."
Jeff attended St. Ambrose University in Davenport IA and Cerritos College in Norwalk CA majoring in journalism and business. Jeff enlisted and served active duty in the Army at Ft. Polk LA as a Spec 4 Telecommunications Operator from Feb 1984 to Aug 1987.
Jeff worked for Fed Ex and Service Associates of America as a teleservices company supervisor. Jeff was previously responsible for fund-raising for a variety of non-profit organizations: City Wide Club of Houston, Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Jewish National Fund, Newspapers 'N Education, Alley Theatre and the Houston Ballet.
Jeff relished his relationship with eleven siblings. He is survived by his brother Michael McCarthy and wife Jean of Des Moines; brother A. Joseph McCarthy and wife Chi of Houston; sister Monica McCarthy of Des Moines; brother Marty McCarthy and wife Judy of Washington; brother James McCarthy and wife Ann of West Des Moines; brother Marcus McCarthy and wife Mindy of Katy, Texas; sister Mary McCarthy of Phoenix; brother John McCarthy of Lake Elsinore, California; sister Michelle Brown and husband Blake of Newport Beach, California, and many adoring nieces and nephews.
Jeff was preceded in death by his daughter Breanna, his parents, sister Jeanette and brother Justin (only eight days before Jeff's passing). Surrounded by his Houston family, Jeff punched his first class, one-way ticket to heaven. God must have needed an erudite thinker to elevate the quality of their divine discussions.
