Jerry Roth, 78, of Narrowsburg, N.Y., died on March 21, 2020.
Jerry Edward Roth was born on July 11, 1941, in Wayland, Iowa. He was the only child of Alice and
Ronald Roth. As a young
man, he studied theater at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant and the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
Jerry began his professional theater career in Iowa in 1963, directing such plays as Desire Under the Elms. In the mid-1960s, he moved to California's Bay Area, where he founded The Company Theater of the Bay Area, producing and directing Entertaining Mr. Sloane, The Watering Place, Line, King Lear, Exit the King, The Flies, Brecht on Brecht, and many other classics of the stage. In 1974, he relocated to New York City, where his production of The Golden Fleece by A.R. Gurney won The Direct Theatre's directing award. He also directed Right You Are, If You Think You Are at the same theatre; and several plays at off-off Broadway's The Classic Theatre, including The Barber of Seville and Roundheads and Peakheads.
He spent his final years living in Narrowsburg, N.Y., spending time with his daughters and his grandchildren. Jerry's life was characterized by his passion for the theatre, his deep love for his children, his gregarious nature, and love of life.
Survivors include his daughters, Jade and Rachel Roth and Sarina Crisci; his grandchildren, Bronwyn Edwards, Delilah and Violet Silberman and Brian Reynolds, all of the New York City region; his former wives are Patricia Roth, Elmsford, and Bertha Rogers, Delhi.
