Joe Mauck February 9, 1926 - June 10, 2003

Joe Mauck, 77, of Des Moines, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Theatre Museum on the Midwest Old Threshers grounds in Mt. Pleasant. A reception will follow at the Iris Restaurant.

Mr. Mauck was born February 9, 1926, in Tindall, Missouri, the son of Otis and Tressie Mauck. He served in the Naval Air Corps for three years, participating in submarine and weather patrols over the Gulf of Mexico and the Panama Canal.

Following his years of service, he graduated from Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo., where he served as president of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He met Jane Caldwell while both were students at Culver Stockton and they were married on June 7, 1952.

Mr. Mauck went on to earn advanced degrees at Drake University and the University of Iowa. In the late 1950s he hosted a television show on Iowa Educational Television called, "Let's Read a Book." He was an elementary school principal in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and West Liberty, and then taught in the Education Department at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, where he retired in 1995 as Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
