John Charles Kennedy, 88, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, June 6, 2020, at Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.
Celebration of Life
services will be held
10:30 a.m. Monday, June 22,
at the United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kwang Song officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Sunday, June 21, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Interment with military honors will be held at the Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church, Hospice of Washington County or the Disabled American Veterans. John was born Aug. 28, 1931, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Charles and Mildred (Rice) Kennedy. He attended No. 7 country school and later attended Washington Community Schools graduating in 1949. John was united in marriage to Iris "June" Bodkins on July 31, 1955.
John farmed all of his life in the Washington Community. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Washington. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge and Washington Masonic Lodge 26. John served nine years in the Army Reserves and was a member of Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. John enjoyed watching NASCAR on TV and was thrilled to attend the Daytona 500. He was a fan of John Wayne and enjoyed watching his Westerns on TV. John enjoyed his Minneapolis Moline tractors and going to the County Fair to support his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their activities. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers fan.
He is survived by two daughters, Jeannie Edwards and husband Bill of Wayland, Iowa, and Julie Timmins and husband Bruce of Washington, Iowa; five grandchildren, Pennie Schlatter and husband Doug of Swedesburg, Iowa, John Edwards and wife Jaimee of Washington, Iowa, Nicole Peterson and husband Jim of Wayland, Iowa, Tim Timmins and wife Betsy of Washington, Iowa, and J.C. Timmins and wife Robin of Springville, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-
great-grandson; two brothers, Richard "Dick" Kennedy of Iowa City, Iowa, and Robert "Bob" Kennedy of Washington, Iowa; one sister, Martha Hahn of Washington, Iowa; sister-in-law, Doris Bodkins; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2005; sister, Shirley Jean Geil; sister-in-law, Linda Kennedy; brother-in-law, Gerald Hahn; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
