John Dale Myers was born January 23, 1940, in his grandparent’s home north of Packwood to Gaylord Dale Myers and Reva Blanche Mercer Myers. John grew up on the family farm and graduated from Packwood High School in 1958. He was a member of the Packwood Trojans 4-H Club and shared that status with his children and grandchildren who were also members. He continued to farm after graduation and worked at the Packwood Elevator as well. In his younger years he worked as a carpenter, at the lumber yard and at the locker all in Packwood. In addition to row crops he also raised pigs and cattle.
John married the love of his life, Yolanda F. Nelson, on May 29, 1960. Together they raised three children, Christine, Steve and Mike. They had a very long and successful marriage and taught their children a lot about hard work. Other than John’s pride in farming, seeing all of his family around was his true pride and joy. He was always the first one to greet family at the door whenever they came over and his smile would light up a room when he would see his grandchildren.
John was very proud to live on his family’s Iowa Century Farm. The family was awarded that honor in 1987.
John started working for Farm Bureau as a crop adjuster in 1987 and he continued to do so until his death. John served as Polk Township Clerk for 20 years, was a member of the Packwood Lion’s Club, was on the Jefferson County Fair Board for over 20 years and was a Farm Bureau member.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine Franklin and Nancy Mills Rachford; two grandchildren, Jacob and Tyler Bormann; and a son-in-law, Jim Mefford.
Left to honor his memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Yolanda; his children, Christine Mefford, Steve (Kim) Myers, Mike (Jenny) Myers; six grandchildren, Jordan Bormann, Derek Bormann, Makenna Myers, Tessa Myers, Malcolm Myers and Kelly Myers; two step-grandchildren, Katie Shelangoski and Colten Showman; three step great-grandchildren; as well as many extended family and friends.
