John E. Hinkle
John E. Hinkle, 78, of Winfield, died Sunday, Oct. 14, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Visitation will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, where the family will meet with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Rev. Fran Griffeth officiating. Burial will follow at the Swedesburg Church Cemetery with military rites.
Memorials have been established for the Swedesburg Church Cemetery and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
John was born August 3, 1929 in Wayland, the son of Peter and Laura Clawson Hinkle. On Nov. 27, 1953 he married Sylvia LaVonne Sandburg in Swedesburg.
A farmer, he worked for the Henry County Road Department for 23 years and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953. He was a member of the Winfield American Legion post and a member of the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He is survived his wife; two sons, Edward Hinkle of Burlington and David Hinkle of Canton, Ill.; one daughter, Brenda Gott of Winfield; one brother, Robert Hinkle of Fort Madison; one half-sister, Carmen Barr of Mt. Pleasant; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
His parents, brother Peter, half-brother Richard and half-sisters Georgianna and Marcella preceded him in death.
