John E. Young Jr., 80, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, May 15, 2023, at the Washington County Hospital following a sudden illness.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2023, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa with Father Bernie Weir officiating. Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2023, at St. James Catholic Church. Interment will take place at a later date at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to the United Presbyterian Home. Services will be livestreamed on the Jones & Eden Facebook page. John was born April 23, 1943, in Washington, Iowa, the son of John E. and Roxie H. (Fry) Young. He graduated from Washington High School in 1961, then attended the University of Iowa. John was united in marriage to Martha “Marty” Chebuhar on March 3, 1962, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, IA.
John lived his entire life in Washington, Iowa. He enjoyed a 34 year career at Procter & Gamble in Iowa City, Iowa and 25 years of retirement. John was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Los Angeles Dodgers fan, enjoyed traveling, coin collecting, baseball card collecting, and antique cars. He grew up a “farm boy” and always carried that with him throughout his life. By far John’s greatest love was his family. He brought a smile to everyone’s face with his funny stories and hilarious one-liners.
He is survived by his wife, Marty Young of Washington, Iowa; daughters, Julie (Tom) Borchardt of Ankeny, Iowa; Missy (Monte) Schooley of Iowa City, Iowa; and Carrie (Mark) Ziegelbein of Plano, Texas; seven grandchildren, Lindsay (Gideon) Cox, Abbie Schooley, Kaley (Thomas) Ball, Erin Borchardt, Sam, Noah and Emma Ziegelbein; sister, Sara (Keith) Murphy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents.
