John Harold Jones, 99, of Crawfordsville, Iowa, died Friday, June 5, 2020, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the Salem Welsh Presbyterian Church in rural Columbus Junction, Iowa, with the Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Tuesday, June 9, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, where the family will be present to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment with military honors will take place at the Cambrian Cemetery in rural Columbus Junction, Iowa. John Harold was born March 30, 1921, in Crawfordsville, Iowa, the son of Hugh and Bessie (Rees) Jones. He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1938 as Valedictorian of his class. John Harold served with the 353rd Infantry Regiment of the 89th Infantry Division during World War II from June 1942 until January 1946 in the European Theater. He earned the rank of First Sergeant and received two battle stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Maxine Ritter on March 27, 1948, in Ottumwa, Iowa.
John Harold was an active member of the Salem Welsh Presbyterian Church. He served as Sunday School Superintendent for one year, Clerk of Session for six years, Church Treasurer for 29 years and was on many other committees over the years. He was a lifelong farmer except for his time in the service. He was a member of Farm Bureau and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Margaret Clark and husband Henry of Kansas City, Mo., and Betty Jane Miller and husband Hugh of Riverside, Iowa; six grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marjorie I. Jones of Wellman, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
John Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie M. Jones; daughter, Maxine Marie; four brothers, William H. Jones, Thomas E. Jones, Robert E. Jones and Lester R. Jones; infant sister, Margaret Elizabeth Jones; three sisters-in-law, Lois Jones, Phyllis Jones and Marion Jones; three nephews, Willis, Wayne and Larry Jones; and two nieces, Sara Patterson and Marsha Jones.
