John “Zeke” Joseph Schantz Jr., 56, of Wapello, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at his home. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 14, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Celebration of Life at the Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Wapello. John was born on December 19, 1965, in Washington, Iowa, the son of John Joseph and Karen Jean (Trier) Schantz. John was a 1984 graduate of Wapello High School and a 1988 graduate of William Penn. On July 12, 2007, John was united in marriage to Joellen Eversmeyer in Las Vegas. He owned and operated Grandview Service. John was an avid hunter and fisherman, fishing in several crappie tournaments throughout the Southeast and most recently returned from a big hunt in South Africa. He also enjoyed golfing, mushroom hunting, gardening, cigars, whiskey, playing pitch and was a State Cribbage Champion but, most of all, John dearly loved his girls and grandchildren.

John will be deeply missed by his wife, Joellen; his four special girls, Megan (Jay) Smith of Davenport, Kori (Alex) Buffington of Muscatine, Britney (David) Klein of Sugar Grove, Illinois, and Bailey Yotter of Wapello; his grandson and “bestest buddy,” Hudson Buffington and his granddaughter “devil girl,” Olive Buffington; and siblings, Cindy Singleton of Wapello, Greg (Cathy) Greiner of Wapello, Jeanne (Paul) Nichols of Eatonton, Georgia, Chris (Kenny) Freeman of Irene, Illinois, and Julie Rich of Kirksville, Missouri.

John was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Mike Singleton.
