WELLMAN ? Jonathan James Smithers, 31, formerly of Wellman, died Saturday March 4, 2017, in Lenexa, Kansas.
Celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 9, at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. The family requests memorial donations be made to Powell Funeral Home for funeral expenses.
Mr. Smithers was born Aug. 16, 1985, in Iowa City, the son of David and Joyce (Condon) Smithers.
He attended Mid-Prairie Elementary before being home-schooled through 12th grade. He was an Eagle Scout with Wellman Troop 236 of the Boy Scouts. For his Eagle Scout project, he posted nature signs in Hayes Timber in Washington County. A veteran of the Iraq War, he enlisted in the Army in 2005, attaining the rank of sergeant. He faced combat in Sadr City, Baghdad, in 2007, and was discharged in 2008. After his service, he worked as a biomedical technician and maintained a close relationship with fellow veterans. He was loved by his family and friends.
Surviving are his parents, David and Joyce Smithers of Wellman; and two brothers, Matthew, and Nicholas Smithers, both of Wellman.
