Joseph William McElroy
Joseph William McElroy, 75, of Grinnell, died Friday morning, Sept. 15, 2000, at Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo, of renal failure.
The memorial service will be 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at St. Paul?s Episcopal Church in Grinnell, with the Rev. Dr. L.A. King officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. There will be no family visitation. Memorials may be made to the Powell 3 Patients Association, attn. Iowa Methodist Medical Center inn Des Moines. Wallace-Pence Funeral Home of Newton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McElroy was born May 23, 1925, at Mt. Pleasant, the son of Homer K. and Willa Mae Edens McElroy. He married Pauline Brannian on December 28, 1948, in Oskaloosa. A 1943 graduate of Mt. Pleasant Community High School, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until retiring in 1972, with 20 years active duty and ten as fleet reserve. He lived in Grinnell from 1972 until this year, working 28 years as a member of the Grinnell College administrative staff. He was a member of the American Legion, A.A.R.P. and A.A.
Survivors include a son, Larry Brannian of Buffalo, Wyo.; a daughter, Paula Jo Bell of Marengo; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers and three sisters.
