MOUNT PLEASANT ? Josephine ?Jo? Ellen Sutter, 86, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, in Park Place Elder Care in Mount Pleasant.
Visitation will begin after noon, Monday, Aug. 3, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wayland with the Rev. Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will be in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, south of Wayland. The family requests that memorials be given to Sugar Creek Mennonite Church or Mennonite Mission Network.
Mrs. Sutter was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Stronghurst, Ill., the daughter of Charles Olney and Vera Mae (Miller) Ring. She married Clarence Raymond Sutter on Nov. 15, 1945, in Peoria, Ill.
She received her education throughout the United States as she traveled with her family from military base to military base. She was a devoted wife and homemaker. She worked as a medical assistant for a number of physicians. She followed her husband as he pastored churches in Peoria, Ill., and in Manson, Montea, Sutherland and Des Moines in Iowa. The couple later served in Dayton, Ohio, East Peoria, Ill., and Lima, Ohio. Returning to Iowa, they also served churches in Burlington and Mount Pleasant. She was active in all of the programs of the church, including teaching Sunday school and Bible school, and directing church plays. She was a member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. While raising her family, she found time to be a den mother and followed all of her children?s activities. She liked to camp and enjoyed all family outings. She often did a lot of sewing, made stuffed animals and nearly 100 quilts. She was a member of the South Center Club, was an original member of the Rhythm Rockers, and loved to travel.
Surviving are two daughters, Freda Dunlavy and husband Ken of Altoona, and Rebecca Brummitt and husband Jim of East Peoria, Ill.; four sons, Charles Sutter and wife Janet of Mount Pleasant, Jerry Sutter of Stockport, Pete Sutter and wife Rita of Apple Creek, Ohio, and Dan Sutter and wife Cheryl of Pekin, Ill; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on Aug. 20, 1998; one daughter, Linda Jo Troyer; one daughter-in-law, Lynette Sutter; one brother, Richard Charles Ring; and one sister, Gwendolyn Sue Perry.
