Joyce L. Young, 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11, 2023 surrounded by family. Family, friends and those whose life Joyce touched are welcome to join her family for a memorial service on Monday, June 19, at 1:00 p.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends after the service with a coffee time at the funeral home to reminisce, grieve and support each other. Memorials in Joyce’s name (checks to Delbert Young) may be left at the funeral home.

Joyce was born July 28, 1935, to Charles and Eva (Pettyjohn) Romer in Newton, Iowa. In 1953, she married the love of her life, Delbert F. Young, at the Newton Nazarene Church. The two of them celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in January. To this marriage they had six children who they raised in the Newton area before moving to Ainsworth, Iowa, in July of 1988.

She was an exceptional wife and mother. Everyone who knew her, knew her children and grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life. She was a homemaker who devoted her life to her family and Jesus. In her early years she worked in the kitchen at Thomas Jefferson school.

Joyce lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; a family barbeque or fishing trip, listening to her son play the guitar around a campfire, celebrating a wedding, birthday or holiday with her loved ones or reading daily devotions. Despite having many children and grandchildren, she always had time for everyone and had a lot of love to give. Many people considered her their surrogate mom and grandma.

She is survived by her husband Delbert F. Young; her children Danny (Teresa) Young, Charles “Chuck” Young, Garry (Charlotte) Young, Eddie (Susan) Young, and Kathleen Young (Mark Dowis); 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Eva Romer; infant son, Delbert Junior Young; sisters, Madeline Lester and Joanne Perry; and mother and father-in-law, Ralph and Laverne Young.
