KALONA ? Katherine J. ?Katie? Borntreger, 98, of Kalona, died Monday, April 25, 2011, in Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 29, at the Kalona Mennonite Church. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the South Gingerich Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Paloma Ministries (Mrs. Borntreger?s son Joe, missionary to Mexico), or Pleasantview Home.
Mrs. Borntreger was born Sept. 28, 1912, in Reno County, Kan., the daughter of Joseph M. and Lydia (Hochstetler) Schrock. She was married to Jacob Y. Borntreger on Jan. 28, 1940, in Buchanan County.
She and her husband lived in Missouri, and moved to Kalona in 1959. She was a resident at the Kalona Valley Apartments from 1983 until late 2009. She accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized. She was a charter member of the Full Gospel Revival Center in Kalona. She enjoyed the simple things in life and helping others. She was known for having a song for every occasion, and for being very bold in her witness for Christ and faithfully living by her convictions.
Surviving are six children and their spouses, Jonas Borntreger and wife Marlene of Oxford, Lydia Chorpening and husband Russell of Shell Lake, Wis., Joe Borntreger and wife Esther of El Paso, Texas, Sarah Yoder and husband Anthony of Kalona, Amos Borntreger and wife Mary of Sarasota, Fla., and Malinda Meeks and husband Richard of Mountain Home, Ark.; 26 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lydia (Mrs. Noah J.) Gingerich, and Lizzie (Mrs. Levi N.) Hochstetler of Clark, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Barbara; one great-granddaughter; four brothers; and one sister.
