Katie M. Nichols, 96, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Maquoketa, passed away Dec. 22, 2020, at Park Place Elder Care in Mount Pleasant. A graveside service for family will be followed by a celebration of life later in 2021. Dawson Funeral Services of Maquoketa is assisting the family.

Katie was born Aug. 27, 1924, in Dallas County, Iowa, to John M. and Katie M. (Schock) Keller. She taught elementary school for a number of years and married Lawrence Ray Nichols in 1962. She earned her bachelor's degree at Drake University in 1966. She enjoyed reading and was honored by the Maquoketa Sentinel-Press in 2009 for her numerous community volunteer activities.

She is survived by her children, Donald R. Nichols of Kansas City, Mo., Robert Eugene Nichols of Omaha, Neb., Susan Ellen McBride of Mount Pleasant and Kathryn Louise Jacobs of Morris, Ill.; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Ruth Keller.

In lieu of gifts, the family asks well-wishers to make donations in Katie's name to the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa.
