Keith D. "Lumpy" Messer, 68, of Burlington, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, at Great River Medical Center.

Born on Jan. 5, 1952, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Keith Duane was the second son of Buena Jean (Brooks) and Earl Sherman Messer. He went to school in Mount Pleasant. Keith's work history began notably at Jerry's Pizza in Mount Pleasant. Later, he

was employed for several years by ADM Grain Elevator on the Mississippi River in Gulfport, Ill. He retired from the US Gypsum Plant in Sperry after close to 30 years employment.

In October 1979, he married Nina Carkuff. On Oct. 12, 1985, they welcomed their only child, Adam Cameron Messer, into their lives.

Keith's many hobbies highlight his love of the outdoors. An avid rock-hound, arrowhead hunter and flint-napper, he was skilled in wood carving, specializing in wildlife creatures. Several of his creations won awards in local and state competitions. A disc golf enthusiast, he became adept at the senior level where he repeatedly placed high and won tournaments in surrounding states.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his son, Adam; and three brothers, Steve (Mary Ann), David (Valerie) and Kent Messer, all of Mount Pleasant.

A private memorial service will be held later.
