Kenneth Hanson, age 79, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospital after a brief illness.
Celebration of life services will be held Tuesday, October 4, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Anthony DeVaughn officiating. Calling hours will begin at noon Monday, October 3, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Washington County Hospital Foundation, the YMCA of Washington County, and the Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center. Ken was born November 29, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Allan and Florence (Steckel) Hanson. Ken graduated from Washington Senior High School in Washington, Iowa, and Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Ken was united in marriage to Rosemary Theobald on September 24, 1966, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. He was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army in 1972.
Ken owned and operated Iowa Bridge & Culvert, formerly Hanson Concrete, and was a Hall of Fame inductee for the Associated General Contractors of Iowa. At the time of his passing, he was on the board of directors for the Riverside Casino and the Washington County Hospital Foundation and provided guidance for multiple community funding initiatives, including the YMCA of Washington County and the United Methodist Church. He served as former board president of the Washington County Hospital Board of Trustees, was active with the Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center steering committee, and contributed to many causes throughout Washington. In 2021, Ken’s community commitment was recognized with the Bill Sitler Rotary Community Service Award.
He loved Washington, Iowa, and worked boundlessly for its betterment. Known by many as Barney, Ken loved time spent with friends at the Washington Golf and Country Club, the bowling alley, and his newest social venture, a weekly coffee conclave at Dodici. He was a Shriner, Free Mason, and member of Ducks Unlimited. Ken loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, the St. Louis Cardinals, a strong Manhattan, and wintering in Sanibel Island, Florida, with his wife Rosemary.
He is survived by son, Eric Hanson and wife Shannon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; son, Greg Hanson and wife Maria of North Liberty, Iowa; son, Nicholas Hanson and wife Genevieve of Falls Church, Virginia; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Rose, Peter, Julian and Kirin Hanson; and his nieces and nephews.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosemary; brother, Don Hanson and sister-in-law, Julie Hanson.
